Family Reading Night is coming to MPPL!
On Thursday, November 16, 2023, make a plan to spend time as a family reading!
Mount Prospect Public Library is joining the statewide event, Family Reading Night, with Family Reading Night Kits. These kits will be available while supplies last at the Youth Services Department’s desk starting Monday, November 6, 2023, through Thursday, November 16, 2023. Each kit will include an activity, booklist, and a free book. The first 25 families will also receive a second free book to add to their home library.
Family Reading Night is an annual event sponsored by the Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian and the Illinois State Library’s Illinois Center for the Book. It is a wonderful event for families to bond over a love of reading. With adults and children reading together, children can improve their literacy skills including comprehension and vocabulary.
The book chosen for this year’s Family Reading Night Kit is Jo Jo Makoons: The Used-to-Be Best Friend by Dawn Quigley. We chose this book to celebrate Native American Heritage Month, which is the month of November. Dawn Quigley is an enrolled citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe and her main character, Jo Jo Makoons, is also Ojibwe.
Along with the Family Reading Night Kit, there will be various activities in the Youth Services Department in November including scavenger hunts and coloring pages. On Thursday, November 16, 2023, there will be a special cozy reading spot set up if you choose to do your family reading in the library.
