Library History
The vision for a public library in Mount Prospect began with the Mount Prospect Woman’s Club in October 1929. Their efforts laid the foundation for what would become an official tax‑supported institution in 1943. Read more about the history of the Mount Prospect Public Library.
Equitable Access at the Library
The Mount Prospect Public Library is committed to providing equitable access to library services, collections, programs, facilities, and digital resources for all members of the community. In fulfilling its public service mission, the library recognizes and values the diversity of the Village of Mount Prospect and the broader community it serves.
The library complies with all applicable federal and state nondiscrimination laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Illinois Human Rights Act. The library does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, national origin, or any other characteristic protected by law.
Accessibility is a core component of the library’s commitment to equitable service. The library provides accessible facilities, assistive technology, reasonable accommodations for programs, and accessible digital resources in accordance with applicable law. The library maintains a comprehensive ADA Accessibility webpage outlining:
- Physical accessibility features and assistive equipment
- Program accommodation procedures
- Website and digital accessibility standards and remediation efforts
- Procedures for requesting alternative formats or filing accessibility concerns
Patrons seeking additional information about physical or digital accessibility are encouraged to visit the library’s ADA Accessibility webpage or contact the library directly for assistance.
Equity involves identifying and reducing barriers to access so that all members of the community are able to use and benefit from library resources and services. The library works to ensure that collections, programs, facilities, and policies support broad and meaningful access for the public.
Diversity encompasses the visible and invisible differences among individuals, including background, identity, experience, and perspective. The library seeks to develop collections and programs that reflect the interests, experiences, and viewpoints of the community it serves.
Inclusion means fostering an environment in which all individuals feel welcome, respected, and able to participate in Library services. The library strives to maintain spaces and services that are accessible, responsive, and reflective of community needs.
The library periodically reviews its policies and practices to ensure continued alignment with its mission and legal obligations.
