What’s New
We are making progress! Renovations will begin in late April, but you can expect the same high level of customer service throughout the project. When you visit the Main Library, you’ll see the following changes:
- A temporary wall installed across from the Patron Services desk.
- New Hold shelves next to the temporary wall.
- Books will be returned to a bin at the Patron Services desk; the lobby automated book return and outdoor walk-up book return will not be available.
- A new water fountain on the first floor with a bottle filler.
- The Library of Things and Lucky Day collections will be available in the main lobby hallway near the Youth department.
It will take us more time to check in your returned items, so you will see them on your account for longer than usual, but remember, we are fine free!
Catalog Consortium and Renovation Information
What. In 2024 the library will complete two large projects: 1) Join a catalog consortium and 2) renovate portions of library space to support the changes. A consortium is a group of libraries that share the same catalog and can easily, quickly, and automatically share physical items with each other. The consortium that MPPL will join is called Cooperative Computer Services (CCS). There are 29 libraries currently in CCS, MPPL will be 30, and Waukegan is joining at the same time, so by the end of the year there will be 31.
In preparation of the migration to CCS, the library is renovating a section of the southeast corner of the library to handle the increased circulation of materials. The public space improvements will include expanded lobby space for more holds, more items in the Library of Things collection, and more Lucky Day materials. Behind the scenes, the reconfiguration of the Circulation and Technical Services staff workrooms will accommodate a larger automated materials handler, which will help manage the increased number of materials that will come with the integration into CCS.
Why. Between January and June of 2022, the library went through a strategic planning process to gather input from the community about what they’d like to see from the library. (You can see full results from the strategic planning process here.) Overall, the community demonstrated support for joining a catalog consortium, and requested improved access to more materials. The top benefits of joining CCS to Mount Prospect residents are:
- Quantity. MPPL owns several hundred thousand physical items; joining CCS will make over 7 million items available to MP residents.
- Borrowing from other libraries. Currently MP residents must work with a staff member to borrow an item that MPPL doesn’t own, and it takes about 7-10 days before the item comes in. With CCS, patrons can place their own hold directly in the catalog and the first copy is automatically sent with a 24-48-hour turnaround.
- Ease of use. MPPL’s current catalog software is over 15 years old; the new Polaris application is modern, responsive, and will be easier for both staff and patrons to use.
- Cost. MPPL currently bears 100% of the cost burden of providing a catalog. Sharing those costs with 30 other libraries means that MPPL will pay about 30% less.
When. The Mount Prospect Board of Trustees approved joining CCS in December 2022, and approved the accompanying renovation in August 2023. MPPL will go live with CCS on October 1, 2024. From January through September 2024 staff will be working on the software migration and staff training. While the migration is underway, we will complete the renovation. We expect to start construction around the beginning of May, and plan to be completed by August 2024.
Catálogo Consorcio e Información Renovación

Los principales beneficios de unirse a CCS para los residentes de Mount Prospect son:
- Cantidad. MPPL posee varios cientos de miles de artículos físicos; Unirse a CCS pondrá a disposición más de 7 millones de artículos a los residentes de Mount Prospect.
- Préstamo de otras bibliotecas. Actualmente, los residentes de MP deben trabajar con un miembro del personal para pedir prestado un artículo que no pertenece a MPPL, y el artículo tarda entre 7 y 10 días en llegar. Con CCS, los usuarios pueden colocar su propia reserva directamente en el catálogo y la primera copia disponible se envía automáticamente con un plazo de entrega de 24 a 48 horas.
- Facilidad de uso. El sistema del catálogo actual de MPPL tiene más de 15 años; La nueva aplicación Polaris es moderna y será más fácil de usar tanto para el personal como para los usuarios.
- Costo. MPPL actualmente soporta el 100% de los costos de proporcionar un catálogo. Compartir esos costos con otras 30 bibliotecas significa que MPPL pagará aproximadamente un 30% menos.
Cuando. La junta directiva de Mount Prospect aprobó unirse a CCS en diciembre de 2022 y aprobó la renovación adjunta en agosto de 2023. MPPL entrará en funcionamiento con CCS el 1 de octubre de 2024.
