The filing deadline to submit 2024 tax returns and pay tax owed or to request an extension is Tuesday, April 15, 2025. Federal tax forms can be found online at irs.gov. To get federal tax forms sent to you, call 1-800-TAX-FORM. Illinois tax forms are available at tax.illinois.gov 

The library also has many commonly used state and federal tax forms available for patrons, and staff can assist with printing additional forms as needed. To find tax forms and for help with printing forms, visit the Research Desk on the second floor.  

In addition to personal tax forms, the library also has business tax forms, including: 1096, 1099, 1099 MISC, 1099 NEC, W-2, W-3, and W-4. 

Get Answers to Common Questions 

For questions about personal income taxes, the library has multiple copies of J.K. Lasser’s Your Income Tax 2025 available to check-out or at the Research desk for in-library use.  

The Consumers Financial Protection Bureau also has helpful guidance on successfully filing income taxes including considerations for hiring a paid tax preparer, accessing your tax refund quickly and safely, and avoiding tax scams.  

Electronic Filing 

The IRS Free File program provides free tax preparation software and electronic filing to taxpayers with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $84,000 or less. Electronic filing for Illinois tax returns is available at mytax.illinois.gov  

Tax Preparation Assistance 

Some local organizations will offer tax preparation assistance. Please call for more information.

The IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals. 

The VITA program has operated for over 50 years. VITA sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including: 

  • People who generally make $67,000 or less 
  • Persons with disabilities; and 
  • Limited English-speaking taxpayers

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides free tax assistance. Visit the AARP Foundation for a full list of sites and services offered.
