We have received questions from our community about the recent executive order calling for the elimination of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an independent federal agency that supports libraries, archives, and museums in all 50 states and U.S. territories.
IMLS has historically supported libraries across the country by funding programs that promote literacy, technology access, and research resources to name a few. At MPPL, we receive approximately $84,000 annually from the Illinois State Library through IMLS-funded grants, which helps fund the purchase of electronic materials.
While these funds represent a small portion of our overall budget, many libraries rely more significantly on federal funding to provide essential services.
For those interested in learning more or sharing their perspectives, organizations such as the American Library Association (ALA) and the Illinois Library Association (ILA) are advocating for libraries and museums across the country and have information and resources available. Additionally, you may contact your elected representatives to express your views on this executive order.
Our commitment remains to providing high-quality library services to our community, regardless of changes in federal funding.
We believe that libraries are incredibly valuable—whether they’re federally funded or not, they play a huge role in education, access to information, and community engagement.
