FAQ

Do I need to register?

Many storytimes and family programs are drop-in and do not need registration. However, some have limited capacity due to space or staffing and require registration. The event details will indicate whether registration is required. You may also see symbols after a program name; (R) means registration is required, and (NR) means registration is not required.

For an open house, drop-in program, can I come at any time?

You don’t need to arrive at the start time to enjoy our open-house drop-in programs, but please arrive at least 20 minutes before the program ends. Please note some drop-in programs such as storytimes begin promptly at the start time.

If a program requires registration, how can I sign up?

You can register for most programs on our online calendar, mobile app, or digital newsletter. You can also register by phone or in person at the library. For certain programs, you will need to contact the library directly to register.

Can I register my child for a program even if they don’t meet the age requirement?

We ask that you please only register your child for programs in their current age group.  The ages listed in the program description can help families find the best fit for their child. We consider this when planning our programs so we can have the right complexity, materials, staffing, and instructions for everyone to successfully participate.

Do I need to attend the program with my child?

Many Youth programs, like storytime, Creation Station, and our parties, have fun activities for children and their families to do together. Children ages 4 and younger must attend all programs with a caregiver. If you drop off a child ages 5 to 8 at a program, please remain in the Youth department for the duration of the program in case your child needs help. And of course, parents and caregivers are always welcome to attend programs.

Do I need a library card to participate?

You do not need a library card to participate in or register for any of our programs. They are open to both residents of Mount Prospect as well as people from other communities.

When does registration start?

We share upcoming programs in our bimonthly newsletter; registration dates may vary. Check each program listing on our online calendar to find out more information, including the date that registration opens.

How much does it cost?

We are pleased to offer programs free of charge.

What if I have a question about a program?

Youth staff is here to help! Please stop by the Youth desk at the Main Library, call the Youth desk, 847-590-3320, or send the library a chat to receive more information.

What if the program I want to register for is already full?

Program registration capacity varies based on factors like supplies, age group, and staffing. Some select programs may have a waiting list after they are full. If a program you are interested in is at capacity, we recommend checking back on the website closer to the event date. When we send out our reminder emails a few days before the program, families may cancel, which may open new spots which are available on a first come, first served basis. We do not currently offer waiting lists for Youth programs, with the exception of South Branch programs.

What if my child needs an accommodation to participate in a program?

The library supports every learner in our community. Please reach out to the Youth desk and ask to speak with a librarian so we can learn more about ways we can support your child. Requests for accommodation at a public program must be received at least seven days prior to an event.

Do you cancel outdoor programs for bad weather?

For everyone’s safety, we may cancel outdoor programs in the case of rain, “real feel” temperatures above 85 degrees, or other inclement weather. If we need to cancel, we will update our online calendar listing so be sure to check the website if the weather looks iffy!

How can I suggest a program?

You can share Youth program suggestions by speaking with a Youth staff member at the desk or by phone, or by filling out the Contact Us form on our website.
