The Library now subscribes to a new exclusive web resource which you may have heard about before. It is Lynda.com, an online training library that covers a wide variety of subjects, including many software titles, scripting languages, design, and web development platforms. You can find out how to use Word, Excel, how to take and edit digital photography, create 3D animation, how to use your smartphone, and so much more! There are also business topics such as management fundamentals, communicating across cultures, and how to run businesses.

What makes Lynda.com appealing is that these course are all video because seeing something in action helps to learn new skills, especially when it is a computer skills.

Chicago Consumers’ CHECKBOOK now with remote access

You can now access Chicago Consumers’ Checkbook from computers outside the Library if you have an MPPL card. You’ll need to register the first time you use it, but this will give you the privilege to submit reviews for all kinds of local services. It’s kind of like Yelp or Amazon, but you don’t have to write clever reviews, just concise.

The popular Chicago Consumers’ Checkbook contains articles and ratings on a wide variety of local service firms, professionals, and stores. Includes ratings for insurance companies, plumbers, heating and air conditioning contractors, auto repair shops, dentists, doctors and more. The Chicago Consumers’ CHECKBOOK online database also includes their national online Guide to Top Doctors, which lists 20,000 of the top-rated physicians in 35 specialties across the country, as well as their Guide to Hospitals which provides detailed information and ratings of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide.

Mango Languages

Did you know we have a fun, fast and easy language learning program called Mango Languages?  The best part it is free for Mount Prospect patrons and you can access it anywhere there is Internet with you library card. Mango is the easiest and most effective way to learn to speak a foreign language.  Mango is available in two versions:

Mango Basic:

Perfect for a foreign language beginner, Mango Basic teaches everyday greetings, gratitudes, goodbyes and helpful phrases in a short period of time.  The courses, which require only two to five hours of time to complete, are currently available in 22 foreign languages and 14 English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.

Mango Complete:

Mango Complete offers a 100-lesson course that digs much deeper and is designed to provide a more complete understanding of the entire language and culture. It is available in nine foreign language and three ESL courses. Foreign language courses include Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.  ESL courses include Polish, Spanish and Portuguese.
