Patriotic Lantern

Idea from Martha Stewart’s Kids- Summer 2005

  • Blue construction paper- cut to 6 x 9 inches (or can use full sheet of paper)
  • White paper strips (about a half inch wide)
  • Red paper strips ( about 1 x 8 )
  • White stars (cut from paper or use foam stars)
  • Glue sticks
  • Stapler
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Red crayons and markers

Fold the blue piece of construction paper in half lengthwise.

Fold the edges back ½ inch to form the top and bottom rims.  Crease them and unfold.

Cut slits from the middle fold to the rims, spacing about ¾ inch apart.

Color red stripes on 2 white paper strips.  Glue the strips along the top and bottom rims.

Shape into lantern by opening the paper and bringing the ends together to overlap slightly.   Staple together at the top and bottom.

Staple a red handle inside the top on both sides.

Glue on the white stars.
