You’ve never met anyone like Poppy. Boldly colorful and warmly effervescent, she is one of the most unfailingly cheerful characters ever invented. Happy-Go-Lucky, written and directed by Mike Leigh, is a refreshing portrait of a London primary school teacher (unerringly portrayed by Sally Hawkins) who looks only at the bright side. Even when faced with a hurting pupil or a churlish driving instructor, her optimism shines. Poppy may often be silly, but it is her compassion and desire to uplift others that makes her joy infectious. Bouncing on a trampoline, learning to flamenco, or teasing a shop clerk, she makes the world a better place, one giggle at a time.
