Paris Pitman, Jr. kills his own gang after a score as not to share the gold. Even as such, Pitman, played by the grinning Kirk Douglas, is a charming, cynical swindler. Pitman is caught and sent to prison in the same Arizona territory he has stashed $500,000. While the warden, played by Henry Fonda, attempts to reform prisoners rather than punish them, Pitman plans his escape. Prisoners are set against one another as Pitman backstabs each and all. There Was a Crooked Man is a western comedy where Fonda plays pure righteousness and Douglas plays absolute corruption and you’re never quite sure if the honorable and the awful will get their just deserts.
