The Aubrey-Maturin Series

Master and Commander book coverDiane of Fiction/AV/Teen Services recommends the Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian:

“The best historical novels ever written,” according to Richard Snow, The New York Times Book Review, January 6, 1991.

The Aubrey-Maturin series of novels are set in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars and are centered on the friendship of Captain Jack Aubrey and an Irish–Catalan surgeon, naturalist and intelligence agent, Stephen Maturin. The 21 novel series is known for its well-researched and highly detailed portrayal of early 19th century life, as well as its authentic and evocative language. These exciting naval adventures also inspired the 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
