Ska Meets Motown

Peculiar album coverSka is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the 1950s. It combines Jamaican folk music, calypso, jazz and R&B. First came ska, then rocksteady. Now add soul, rock and a Motown vibe and you have The Slackers. The Slackers were formed in Brooklyn in 1991 and they’ve been touring ever since. Their 2006 release, Peculiar, is a gathering of songs on love lost, love gained and maybe a little politics between. Highlights include the song “Keep It Simple,” which is reminiscent of ska wetting its toes in Dixieland jazz, and trombonist Glen Pine’s crooning through the heartbreak ballad “What Went Wrong.”
