The 2006 Italian film begins in Sicily, following Salvatore, a poor farmer and widower, along with his children as they try to immigrate to America. Along the way he meets Lucy, a British woman determined to marry someone before reaching Ellis Island. This lyrical portrayal of immigration highlights the realistic hardships of immigration in the 20th century.
