AC Barbeque : the husky and handsome guide to grilling

"For both Anthony Anderson and Cedric The Entertainer, two of the biggest names in comedy of all time, barbeque is more than just food--it's a way of life. Recipes are passed down through generations at backyard cookouts, and pitmasters around the country carry on those traditions at their restaurants. That's what the television show Kings of BBQ on A&E (and now streaming on Hulu) captured as Anthony and Cedric traveled the country with the goal of launching their own spice and BBQ sauce product lines. Their AC Barbeque product line is now carried thousands of stores nationwide, and fans are clamoring for this cookbook to go with them. Organized by regions of the country to best capture the soul of the food including St. Louis, Memphis, and the Carolinas, AC Barbecue showcases the charm of these brilliant actors and comics both in the writing and bold photography. Recipes range from pork belly burnt ends to dry rub beef brisket to jerk ribs, and other favorites like macaroni salad, baked beans, fried catfish, and hush puppies are included as well. There are even snacks and desserts like fried pickles and peach cobbler, and maybe best of all, a whole chapter of sauces and rubs"-- Publisher's website.

Handbook for the revolution : building a more perfect union for the twenty-first century

"On April 1, 2022, the Amazon warehouse known as JFK8, in Staten Island, notched an improbable victory when its workers voted to become the company's first unionized facility. Miraculously, a completely self-taught and worker-led union had defeated one of the most powerful corporations on the planet. In the aftermath, two of the founders of the Amazon Labor Union, Derrick Palmer and Chris Smalls, began traveling across the country to help workers at Amazon and other corporations form their own unions. Unsurprisingly, nearly everyone they met had the same question: How did they do it? In Handbook for the Revolution, Derrick Palmer, who continues to work at JFK8, provides the answer in the form of a how-to guide to organizing in today's workplace while providing gripping, never before-told anecdotes from the ALU's fight and its plans for the future. Practical, philosophical, and full of personality, Palmer's manual-cum-manifesto is an accessible step-by-step playbook for the often contentious and complex process of unionization, and a powerful call for equality--and greater understanding--through worker solidarity. Full of hard-won lessons and personal experience, and written in the context of mass consolidation, fluctuating labor laws, and an ever widening wealth gap, Handbook for the Revolution is an invaluable resource for the modern labor movement, a thrilling chronicle of persistence, and an inspiring push for change in the workplace--and beyond."-- from book jacket.

Hyperadaptive : rewiring the enterprise to become AI-native

"Most leaders are paralyzed without a human blueprint for AI transformation. Isolated successes don't scale because they collide with company culture, roles, and resistance to change. Without a plan for people, the path from promising experiments to an AI-native future remains frustratingly unclear. AI integration expert Melissa M. Reeve provides the missing blueprint. Drawing from four decades of organizational research reimagined for the AI era, she reveals how companies like Moderna, Nike, and Toyota evolved from running AI projects to becoming hyperadaptive organizations that sense, respond, and evolve at AI speed. This book delivers the five-stage progression from AI foundation to organizational orchestration with concrete actions for each phase, explains why 80% of AI initiatives fail and how to avoid predictable pitfalls, guides you through the 'messy middle' where old structures collide with new capabilities, provides practical frameworks for restructuring roles, governance, and resources as AI reshapes work, and shares real-world case studies of organizations that successfully rewired themselves for AI. Whether you're a senior executive setting strategic vision, division leader implementing solutions, or change champion driving adoption, this book addresses your specific challenges. It doesn't promise overnight transformation but provides honest guidance, proven patterns, and hard-won insights needed to evolve your organization incrementally but inevitably toward hyperadaptivity"-- Page 4 of cover.

Radical duke : how one aristocrat-- and the American Revolution-- transformed Britain

"With impressive scholarly sleuthing and a storyteller's eloquence, Danielle Allen has written a landmark book about the people and the ideas that changed the world. By bringing the glamorous Duke of Richmond back to life, Allen paints a panoramic portrait of how principles of human equality and the spirit of independence suffused the Atlantic world in the eighteenth century--a story that shapes us still." --Jon Meacham An explosive, deeply revisionist work that reveals how a renegade English Duke and Thomas Paine, the firebrand polemicist, almost brought the American Revolution to Britain.

The place between our pains : a memoir of what joy can survive

After over a decade of fighting chronic illness, trauma therapist and beloved author K.J. Ramsey was the healthiest she'd been in her life. She packed up her Jeep and set out on a summer of road trips, returning to the places where she first glimpsed joy as a kid. More than adventure, her aim was a personal dare to discover that joy is more trustworthy than trauma. What could go wrong? It turns out, everything. The woman who just wandered through Redwood forests and ran naked into the Pacific suddenly found herself in the hospital fighting to stay alive. A mysterious illness struck like lightning, splintering the best days of her life into the absolute scariest. Told with unhinged humor, lyrical honesty, and zero patience for toxic positivity, The Place Between Our Pains is a true story that reaches past our expectations of what joy can survive. This is a love letter to every life seared by pain or autoimmune disease and a fierce permission slip to show up in the stories we never would have written for ourselves.

Nature's echo : harnessing ancient feedback loops to heal a changing planet

From the birth of galaxies to the revival of forests, the greatest transformations in our universe have been driven by quiet, self-reinforcing processes known as feedback loops. These ancient forces created the universe, they allowed biodiversity to proliferate, they gave rise to climate change, and the idea that we are separate, isolated selves. However, if we can stop resisting them, and begin to work with them, these immense natural forces can become powerful engines for social and ecological regeneration. Nature's Echo reveals how the mechanisms that shaped our world can also be the ones to revive it. Through this journey across the scales of existence, you will discover that by tapping into ancient feedback loops, we have the power to drive the inner personal healing that can jumpstart massive environmental recovery. For anyone who feels overwhelmed by the climate crisis and is searching for a path forward, this book replaces despair with grounded hope and conviction.

A photo of A century of Hitchcock : the man, the myths, the legacy

A century of Hitchcock : the man, the myths, the legacy

"Known as the "Master of Suspense," Alfred Hitchcock was a prolific film director whose work spanned six decades and included more than fifty feature films. His hard work and commitment to his craft began at the University of London in 1916, where he developed skills in drawing and design that he would later apply to his work as a silent film title card designer for the British branch of the American film company Famous Players-Lasky. This role helped Hitchcock break into the film industry; after the branch closed in 1922, he worked as an art director, production designer, editor, writer, and assistant director on films for independent producers. Hitchcock's solo directorial debut The Pleasure Garden released in 1925, but it was not until the 1927 release of The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog that his career began to take off. The Lodger was Hitchcock's first thriller, establishing his prowess in the genre he would become best known for with films such as Vertigo (1958), Psycho (1960), and The Birds (1963). Hitchcock's work was met with great success and critical acclaim, earning him six Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, a BAFTA Fellowship, multiple lifetime achievement awards, induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the preservation of nine of his films in the United States National Film Registry. In A Century of Hitchcock, author Tony Lee Moral chronicles the director's career "from his early innovations in silent cinema in Germany to his golden age as a Hollywood icon." Writing on the hundredth anniversary of Hitchcock's first film and the fiftieth anniversary of his last, Moral reflects on Hitchcock's contentious legacy in the context "of contemporary discussions about gender, power, and the ethics of artistic genius." Using previously unpublished interview transcripts and archival materials as evidence, Moral seeks to challenge and recontextualize the portrayal of Hitchcock as abusive and manipulative that has been perpetrated by biographer Donald Spoto and other historical accounts. A Century of Hitchcock invites readers to think critically about the "human complexities of collaboration" and the dangers of relying on a single biographical narrative"-- Provided by publisher.

The first All-Star Game : Babe Ruth, FDR, and America at the crossroads

"America was still reeling from the crash. Breadlines stretched around city blocks and shantytowns sprawled in the shadows of skyscrapers. American optimism was fading--and baseball was in trouble, too. Owners slashed budgets, fans stayed home, and even the mighty Babe Ruth seemed to have lost some of his magic. The election of Franklin D. Roosevelt offered hope, but just days before his inauguration, five shots rang out--missing the president-elect, killing the mayor of Chicago, and setting in motion a chain of events that would eventually bring together the world's best ballplayers for the first All-Star Game. It was a newspaperman's idea: The Game of the Century. Put the world's best on one field but let the public decide who belonged there. At a moment when some feared the national pastime would not survive the decade, Chicago would host it as the highlight of the 1933 World's Fair. The city hoped to shed its reputation as a haven for gamblers and gangsters and help restore America's standing on the world stage. But abroad, dark clouds were gathering. Hitler was Germany's new chancellor, and Mussolini had consolidated his power. As visitors strolled the fairgrounds, Italian warplanes flew overhead, and a zeppelin sent by the German delegation circled the city emblazoned with a swastika. The First All-Star Game is the story of a nation and a sport at a crossroads-and a sweeping look back at baseball's early history and the America that shaped it. Deeply researched and filled with remarkable characters--legendary players like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Lefty Grove rubbing shoulders with Bonnie and Clyde, Al Capone, and Charles Lindbergh--Randall Sullivan explores the history of an American obsession and captures the moment when both the sport and the nation found renewal in a single spectacle of hope"-- Provided by publisher.

What grows in weary lands : on Christian resilience

Early Christians often grappled with a reality we rarely talk about in contemporary life: that God seems to abandon the soul at times, leaving us feeling as if we are alone and left to our own resources. These are times of futility, when work and relationships feel hard, when prayer feels unsatisfying, and we question whether our efforts are amounting to anything. For centuries, Warren notes, times of "aridity" were seen as necessary prerequisites for growth and maturity. Yet in our culture fixated on speed and optimization, we risk losing this deeper sense of the human journey and the resilience that comes with it.Writing for a moment when two-thirds of Americans are dissatisfied with their work, and a sense of languishing is widespread, Warren draws from both her own season of exhaustion and the rich well of Christian tradition--particularly that of the earliest Christian monks--to discover the habits and mindsets that anchor us in times of doubt, difficulty, and spiritual dryness. She offers hope to those who feel like life is overwhelming, taxing, and disorienting. What Grows in Weary Lands speaks to anyone longing for a life of depth in a distracted age. Warren helps us see that nothing is wasted--that even in desert seasons something good is growing, rooted in grace and reaching toward glory.

Force of nature : understanding evolution's deepest logic--and putting it to use

"Most of us learned about natural selection back in high school science class and think we understand it pretty well-or, at least, we get the basics of how it works. Many of us even have a sense of its implications for everyday life, like how we should be cautious about overusing antibiotics, but also take care to finish out a full prescription even after we're already feeling better. Yet studies show that significant misconceptions about evolution and natural selection abound, even among highly educated specialists in biology, from medical students to high school biology teachers-not to mention the rest of us. In Force of Nature, professor of biology and law Owen D. Jones shows how we misunderstand and neglect natural selection to our detriment, both missing opportunities to better achieve our goals and, sometimes, even imperiling lives and livelihoods. Ranging across the natural world and spheres of human endeavor alike, from medicine, agriculture, and AI to economics, law, and beyond, Jones demonstrates how a finer appreciation of the speed, scale, and applications of natural selection-including its influence on behavior, both human and animal-can help open new horizons in cancer treatment and space exploration; create faster machines and more maneuverable robots; design more effective, just laws; and more. We all know that evolution put us here in the first place, but Force of Nature shows how a richer understanding of it can be even more useful than we may think"-- Provided by publisher.

Scrap book

"Utilizing ekphrasis and excerpts from the author's mother's journal, this book creates a textural interior landscape. Deeply personal and intimate, the speaker wrestles with identity, the way in which they view themselves and their relationships to others, highlighting how slippery the act of knowing (or trying to know) can really be. What does it mean when how we see ourselves differs from how others see us, and how does it affect our psyches when we're confronted with these discrepancies? In even our most intimate relationships, can we ever really know how others see us? If we knew how others saw us, would it change how we see ourselves? And how would it? This book poses large questions about human relationships and one's relationship to themselves/the ego"-- Provided by publisher.

Just plain filthy : the story behind book banning's trial of the century

"In 1975, the school board members of a small Long Island town did what they thought was a no-brainer: they ordered the removal of nine books from a high school library. The books included some classics - Richard Wright's Black Boy; Desmond Morris's The Naked Ape; Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five - but that didn't matter to board chair Richard Ahrens, who called the collection "anti-American, anti-Christian, anti-Semitic, and just plain filthy." Maybe he thought the town was with him. Maybe he thought nobody would care. He certainly didn't think he would be sued by seventeen-year-old Steven Pico or that the case would end up before the United States Supreme Court, the first and only book ban dispute ever to do so. The only one so far. Recent years have seen a surge in book challenges, and it is only a matter of time before another reaches the high court. Island Trees v. Pico ended in a loss for the school board, but not a resounding one. It left enough daylight for the current justices to reach a different conclusion. What was the court's ruling? How did it come about? What was the book ban climate in the 1970s and 80s, and how did it differ from today's? Just Plain Filthy is the first book to tell the complete story of Island Trees v. Pico, the flawed yet fascinating case that is the cornerstone of intellectual freedom in America. For now"--Back cover.

What I made for dinner : a memoir

From the author of The Natural Mother of the Child, an exquisite memoir about an amateur home cook's hard and fast descent into an obsession with food celebrities, including Dessert Person Claire Saffitz, Smitten Kitchen's Deb Perelman, Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond, and Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa. When the pandemic sends Krys Malcolm Belc and his young children home to live their lives on laptops, he turns to internet chefs for comfort and inspiration. It begins with Stella Parks and her 46 YouTube videos in which she teaches viewers how to make classic, nostalgic American treats like Cheez-Its, Klondike Bars, and Texas sheet cake. But the recipes aren't enough--Belc needs to watch her showcase each ingredient, explain its importance, and weigh each item on a scale. His fixation on recipe videos, and the women who produce them, start to feel like the only thing that makes sense. Most of life has been put on pause, but food is the one thing that continues to change day to day, season to season. Belc captures the joy and pleasure of cooking for a large family, as well as the mundane reality and occasional frustrations that come with simply getting food on the table. In the midst of it all, he feels a spark of inspiration to carry a second baby, a decision that forces him to confront how he has used both the internet and cooking to cope and distract. Following a trans man whose life is largely structured by keeping the family household running, What I Made for Dinner asks the question we all might ask ourselves while elbow-deep in a roasting chicken: Is having the opportunity to cook meals for your family every day a blessing or a curse?

Autoimmunity & the good girls : how permission to put ourselves first has the power to keep us well

For generations, women have been told to be "good"--to put others first, to silence their own voices, to neglect their own needs. But a new groundswell of evidence reveals the cost: when our lives are compromised, so are our immune systems. Raised in a big Texas-Lebanese family as the eldest and only daughter, Sara Hirsh Bordo grew up caring for everyone else's needs at the expense of her own. Later, as an acclaimed director lifting up other women's stories, she watched her own body collapse under the weight of autoimmune disease and cancer. Only when she finally reclaimed sovereignty over her own voice, did she heal. Determined to understand this link, Sara funded the first quantitative research at the intersection of female empowerment and autoimmunity. The results were groundbreaking: women raised in caretaker roles--especially eldest daughters--are disproportionately likely to develop autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's, lupus, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and more. This study, endorsed by former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona, garnered national media attention and has been shared across 20 countries.
