It’s Spring Break, and I know that my first instinct is to find somewhere far away to escape and forget my life for a few days. Sometimes that’s not possible, and even if it is, I want to have options! Here are a few great books that will take you somewhere you’ve probably never been.
Venture to sunny Southern California in Pasadena by Sherri Smith. Jude is convinced that it wasn’t an accident that led to her best friend floating dead in a swimming pool. Now everyone’s a suspect, and Jude is making so many waves that she might drown.
Or get away to 16th Century England, but better. In My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows, history gets a little help by mixing in shape-shifters with its romance, palace intrigue, and assassination attempts. This alternate history is as hilarious as it is exciting.
You could also escape the hustle and bustle in small town Henrietta, Virginia in The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. You can enjoy its picturesque hills, peaceful countryside, and quaint private school, Aglionby Academy. There’s also a house full of psychics, an ancient buried king, prophesies of kisses and death, murderous teachers, and a magical forest with trees that speak Latin. Maybe not as tranquil as it first seems…
(Note: This is one of the best audiobooks. If you’re an audiobook skeptic, this will probably convert you.)
Of course, staying firmly planted in the every-day is always an option. In If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo, Amanda Hardy only wants to fit in at her new school, but she is keeping a pretty big secret. When she falls for Grant, guarded Amanda finds herself yearning to share with him everything about herself, including her previous life as Andrew.
And if even staying in the present is too dull for you, take a trip back tothe ’80s in the graphic novel Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan. Four 12-year-old girls, earning extra cash at early-morning newspaper delivery, end up embroiled in the middle of an inter-dimensional war. Futuristic weapons and unintelligible languages and dinosaurs all mash together in this exciting and original comic that will help get you through between seasons of Stranger Things.
