Illinois to Repair Roads by Reusing Shingles

Illinois will soon be using recycled shingles to help repair damaged roads throughout the state. This will help to reduce the environmental impact of road repairs while helping the state save money. Governor Quinn estimates the state will save around 8 million dollars annually.

Electronic Recycling Event for Mount Prospect Residents

The Village of Mount Prospect in association with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) is providing a one day collection event for residents to drop off electronics at Mount Prospect’s Public Works building on Saturday, June 18 from 9am to 1:00pm

Only residentially generated equipment will be accepted (see list below). Businesses, school districts and governmental institutions are prohibited from participating in the event, but are encouraged to visit for local recycling info.

Computers – PCs/Laptops    
DVD/VHS Players 
Fax Machines
Mobile Phones
MP3 Players
Peripherals – mice, keyboards, zip drives       
Video Game Consoles

Earth Day Events from the Mount Prospect Park District

Earth Day is Friday, April 22. To celebrate Earth Day, join in one of the Mount Prospect Park District activities:

-Drop off your used electronics for recylcing at the Friendship Park Conservatory on Friday, April 15, or Saturday, April 16, from 9am-12noon. For more information on what types of items will be accepted, please view this list.

-Help clean up a local park on Saturday, April 16, from 11am-3pm. You can choose which park, or you can ask the Park District to suggest a particular location. Participants will receive a certificate of appreciate for their efforts.

-Learn tips on lawn care, composting, gardening and more at the Friendship Park Conservatory on Saturday, April 16, from 1-3pm. This event includes games for kids, crafts, demos and tours.

Recycle Old Holiday Lights

Don’t know what to do with those strings of broken or unused holiday lights?  Recycle them! Several communities have joined with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) to recycle strings of unused or nonfunctioning lights and extension cords.  Garlands, live greens, wreaths and other non-recyclables are not accepted.  In Mount Prospect, you can recycle  your holiday lights at Public Works (1700 W. Central Road) from 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. on weekdays through February 11.  Please call 847/870-5640 for more information.
