We ordered the EarthBoxes yesterday and will have 4 of them outside on the southwest corner of the Library grounds. We have been monitoring the spot and it gets loads of full sun for many hours per day. But we still have at least 3 weeks to go before we can even think about planting them out.

Seed Starting Project: Tomato Sprouts!

The tomato seeds have germinated–mostly. Only 3 of the cells do not have seedlings.

The peppers and basil are growing almost too fast--we won't be planting them for at least another 3 weeks!

And a few of them are starting to get their true leaves already.

Some of the peppers are starting to set fruit and may need to be potted up very soon.

Seed Starting Project: Transplants–One Month of Growth

photo (12)We planted our pepper and basil seeds one month ago today! Some of the seedlings were getting too big for the cells in the flat so we transplanted the largest of each of the varieties and separated seedlings that were growing two to a cell. In the bigger pots, the plants have more room to expand their root systems and do not need to be watered daily or twice daily. We will be starting tomatoes in the next few days.photo (11)

Snowdrops are emerging!

snowdropsmar20142Spring is on the way–this photo from earlier today is of snowdrop tips (Galanthus), one of the earliest spring flowers. Snowdrops are very late in getting started this year–in previous years,  these particular flowers are frequently blooming by early-to-mid March. Nevertheless, their emergence is a sure sign of warm weather to come!
