The World’s Most Interesting Female Reporter…Ever.

Nellie Bly book coverIn 1889, Nellie Bly bullied her newspaper into letting her race around the world. The goal was to beat Phileas Fogg from Around the World in 80 Days. After considerable argument (mainly about her being female and unaccompanied), she set sail and, by steamship and ingenuity, made it home in 72 days. It wasn’t the craziest stunt Bly pulled for a story. She started her career by having herself committed to an insane asylum for an exposé. Bly had more than early success. From 1914 – 1919, she was the only female journalist to cover WWI on the Eastern Front. Nellie Bly: Daredevil, Reporter, Feminist by Brooke Kroeger recounts the fabulous, nearly unbelievable exploits of a truly extraordinary human being.
