The Militaristic Use of Dragons

His Majesty's Dragon book coverThe French are trying to smuggle a weapon across the high seas, but a British Naval warship, the Reliant, intercepts their charge – a dragon egg. In His Majesty’s Dragon, the first book in Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series, Novik creates an alternate history of the Napoleonic Wars where dragons supplement both the French and British forces. The egg hatches and the dragonet will either choose one of the gathered crew as its rider or it will go wastefully rogue. Being chosen means a life in the Aerial Corps of England, a gathering of ruffians and wildcards with no social status – and much to his chagrin, the baby dragon chooses Will Laurence, Captain of the Reliant.
